Block braids aftercare: the first 2 weeks (crochet + braided hair)

I braid fast and I’m careful about neatness, but your result still depends on what you do next. The number one rule after crochet braids or braided hair is simple: keep your roots dry and hands off for the first 48 hours. That short window is where you protect the install, calm the scalp, and avoid early frizz.
Here in Crowley, especially around Deer Ridge, heat and humidity can make fresh styles act up fast. This guide gives you a quick checklist for the first two weeks so your hair braiding stays neat, comfortable, and long-lasting.
First 48 hours: keep crochet braids set, calm, and dry
The first two days are about letting everything settle. Even if your install feels fine, water and constant touching can swell hair, loosen knots or loops, and kick up frizz right at the scalp.
Quick 48-hour rule: No wetting the roots, no steamy showers without protection, and no constant re-styling.
Do this right away
- Sleep on a satin bonnet or satin pillowcase the very first night. It keeps friction down so your block braids and edges stay neat.
- If you shower, keep your hair covered. Humidity counts, especially during Crowley’s hot summers.
- If you feel a little tightness, leave the style alone and give your scalp time to relax. Constant pulling and re-parting makes it worse.
Skip this for now
- No swimming. Chlorine and lake water can dry out hair and create tangling at the base.
- No heavy scalp oils on day one. Too much too soon can cause buildup right where the hair needs to grip.
- Don’t scratch with nails. If you’re itchy, press gently with your fingertips or tap lightly.
Days 3 to 7: sweat and frizz control that actually works in Crowley
After day two, you can start a light routine. This is the week where most people accidentally shorten the life of their crochet braids by overdoing products, over-handling the hair, or letting sweat sit at the scalp.
Moisture, but keep it light
I usually recommend a small amount of scalp oil or braid spray every 2 to 3 days, not daily. The goal is comfort and a healthy scalp, not a coated scalp. If you’re doing school drop-offs in Deer Ridge, running errands, and sitting in a warm car a lot, your scalp can feel sweaty fast. That’s normal. Let it dry out instead of piling on heavy product.
If you sweat, don’t ignore it
- Blot your scalp with a clean towel. Don’t rub the braid pattern.
- Let your scalp fully dry. A cool setting on a blow dryer can help, but keep it moving and don’t aim at one spot.
- If you get buildup, use your fingertips to gently loosen it at the scalp. No nails.
Real-life timing tip: If weekends are your park days in Deer Ridge, try to keep the first week low-sweat. Your braids will stay neater longer, and your scalp usually feels calmer.
Washing crochet braids: the 1 to 2 week mark (and how to not ruin the install)
Most people do best with their first gentle wash at 1 to 2 weeks after installation. If you sweat heavily, you might need to wash sooner. The main mistake I see is soaking the entire style and then leaving it damp for hours.
My simple wash method
- Use a diluted shampoo mix or a gentle co-wash. Focus on the scalp, not the length.
- Massage with fingertips at the parts. Keep the braid pattern intact. No rough scrubbing.
- Rinse carefully, then squeeze excess water out with a towel. Don’t twist or wring.
- Dry thoroughly. Damp crochet hair can hold odor and can mildew if it stays wet too long.

Products and habits that keep box braids looking neat (without buildup)
I keep product advice simple because the wrong product stack is what makes braids look dull fast. You don’t need a shelf full of stuff to maintain box braids, braids box braids styles, or crochet installs.
For the scalp: light oil or braid spray every 2 to 3 days. If your scalp feels fine, do less.
For sleep: satin bonnet or pillowcase nightly. This is the easiest way to reduce frizz without extra product.
For daily styling: keep tension low. Tight ponytails and slick styles too early can stress your edges.
And one more habit that matters a lot: keep your hands out of your hair. People tell me they love that I’m respectful of what they want and I’ll also give suggestions. After your appointment, the best suggestion is usually to stop “fixing” it. Let it wear in.
Loose loops, itching, or tight spots: when to reach out for a touch-up
A little scalp sensitivity in the first couple days can happen. What I don’t want you doing is pushing through real discomfort, or waiting until the install starts slipping. People come to me because they want neat work that lasts a long time, and I want that for you too.
"She doesn't braid super tight like the others and im greatful my edges stay after my braids are out."

Reach out if you notice any of this
- Persistent tightness or headache that doesn’t calm down after the first day
- Itching with visible flakes or a cakey product layer at the parts
- Loose loops, slipping at the base, or sections that are frizzing way earlier than the rest
- A spot you’re worried about covering (yes, I’ve helped people cover thinning areas and “bald spots, ” and we can talk through what’s safe)
If you’re in Deer Ridge: I know your weeks can be busy. If something feels off, message me sooner instead of trying a fix at home that creates tangles or loosens the install.
I keep flexible evening and weekend slots for Crowley, Burleson, Fort Worth, Everman, Rendon, and Edgecliff Village so touch-ups don’t turn into a whole production.
If you’re planning crochet braids as a low-maintenance protective style for I-35W commutes and busy family schedules, this aftercare checklist is what keeps it low-maintenance for real.
