Knotless Braids - Medium first week aftercare tips in Crowley TX

If you want your knotless braids to stay neat, the most important rule in week one is simple: don’t wash for 48 to 72 hours. I hear it all the time after appointments in Crowley: “my knotless braids… very neat” and “did a great job.” That neat finish holds up best when you let the braid base settle, keep your hands out of your hair, and protect it at night.

The first 48 to 72 hours: let the braid base “set”

Right after your medium knotless braids, your scalp usually needs a little time to calm down. A little tenderness can be normal. Sharp pain isn’t. In the first 48 to 72 hours, I generally recommend three things: keep them dry, keep them loose, and keep your hands off them.

Quick rule: No washing for 48 to 72 hours. Avoid heavy manipulation. Leave your braids down so they can settle without extra tension.

What I want you doing right away

  • Sleep with a silk or satin scarf/bonnet, or use a silk pillowcase. Friction is what starts that early fuzz.
  • Keep styles low tension. No tight ponytails, no slick buns, no pulling your edges back.
  • If you need to separate braids for a look, do it gently and stop if you feel tugging at the root.

What to skip for now

  • Heavy oils and thick grease on the braids. They attract lint and can make the style look old fast.
  • Overusing braiding gel at home. One thing people love about my work is I don’t use a lot of gel, especially when hair is thin. Keep that same energy at home.
  • Anything that rubs your hairline a lot, like tight hats and rough hoodie hoods.

Days 3 to 7: the simple routine that keeps medium knotless braids neat

Once you hit day three, the goal is to keep your scalp comfortable and your braids looking fresh without overdoing it. A lot of my returning clients tell me their braids stayed neat for weeks and didn’t frizz, and week-one habits are a big reason why.

Night routine (5 minutes)

Scarf or bonnet. Then a loose pineapple or a low bun with a soft scrunchie so the roots aren’t pulled all night.

Scalp refresh (every 3 to 5 days)

Light mist, then pat. Don’t soak. If you need oil, use a small amount on the scalp only.

Hands off rule

No picking at parts. No constant re-parting. That’s how frizz starts, especially around the perimeter.

Living in Deer Ridge subdivision, a lot of people are doing school pickup and quick park time. If you’re coming home with wind, sweat, or little hands in your hair, do a fast reset: scarf for 10 minutes while you change, then smooth your braid lengths down with your palms. Simple works.

And keep Crowley weather in mind. Hot, humid summers usually do best with water-based moisture and lighter products. During the milder Oct to Feb stretch, your scalp may feel drier, so you may need slightly richer protection, but still keep it light so buildup doesn’t take over.

Products that help, and the ones that quietly ruin box braids and block braids

You don’t need a shelf full of products to keep knotless braids looking good. You need the right texture and the right amount. Think light, clean, and easy to refresh.

My go-to product types for week one

  • Water-based braid spray or a simple mix of water plus a light leave-in in a mister bottle. Mist lightly every 3 to 5 days, then pat the scalp with a clean towel.
  • Lightweight scalp oil only if you need it. A few drops go a long way. Focus on itchy spots, not the whole head.
  • Gentle cleansing option for later, like a diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle or a braid-friendly cleanser, once you’re past that 48 to 72 hour window.

Skip this: Thick butters, heavy grease, and anything sticky on the braid lengths. They collect lint and make medium knotless braids look older way sooner than they should.

If you chose boho knotless braids, be extra gentle with the curly pieces. Use your fingers, not a fine comb, and keep moisture light so curls don’t mat up.

Exercise, sweating, and swimming: the real timeline I tell my Crowley clients

Yes, you can work out. Light exercise is usually fine, even in the first week. The key is what you do right after you sweat.

If you’re doing a spin class or gym sessions

  • Blot your scalp with a clean towel as soon as you can. Don’t rub.
  • Let your scalp dry fully. If you need it, use a cool blow dryer setting at the roots.
  • Avoid tight sweatband pressure right on the hairline. That’s an edge killer over time.

Swimming (pool or ocean)

I recommend waiting at least 1 to 2 weeks before swimming. Chlorine and salt can rough up the hair, dry out your scalp, and speed up frizz. If swimming is non-negotiable, let me know before your appointment so I can talk you through the best plan for your hair and lifestyle.

If something feels “off, ” reach out fast (edges and tension matter)

I’ve had regulars with me for years because I take scalp comfort seriously. People tell me they’re grateful I don’t braid super tight, and they love that their edges are still there when the braids come out. That’s the standard I keep, and I want you to speak up if your install doesn’t feel right.

Reach out the same day if you have persistent pain, numbness, bumps that feel hot, open sores, or braids that are pulling your hairline even when your hair is down.

"She doesn't braid super tight like the others and im greatful my edges stay after my braids are out."

A quick note on timing, length, and medium knotless braids pricing

For Knotless Braids, plan on about 300 minutes for the install. That timing stays about the same across sizes, including XS, small, medium, and large, as long as we’re doing the standard mid-back length. Medium Knotless Braids are $220. If you want waist length or butt length, it’s an extra $30 for each length increase.

If you’re local to Crowley and you want a neighborhood-specific guide, I also have a Deer Ridge knotless braids guide that covers practical upkeep between busy days.
